The 10th anniversary of the “Midsummer Vilnius” festival symbolically renews its vows to the stage, with a program inspired by reflections on the past and glimpses into the future. The festival’s long-standing friendship with Oskaras Koršunovas and his theater (OKT) continues—following Hamlet and Othello, this will be their third performance on the festival stage. And it will also be the first comedy in the festival’s history!
On July 21st, audiences will have a unique opportunity to enjoy the OKT production The Wedding, directed based on Bertolt Brecht’s play The Petit Bourgeois Wedding. The performance delicately balances between the sacred and the absurd, reminding us how easy it is to lose what is most precious in life.
At this wedding, all the guests are familiar: someone talks too loudly, someone stays too silent, and someone is already pouring their third drink. Brecht’s play, infused with Koršunovas’ signature touch, invites us to look into the mirror of our own morality and laugh—because laughing at ourselves is easier when we can pretend we’re laughing at our neighbor.
The play tells the story of a rural man trying to adapt to city life, globalization, and the things that were once sacred but have now become absurd. All of this is presented with a light touch of irony and humor—sometimes biting, but always born from naivety and love. The play thrives on improvisation and the present moment, ensuring that each performance is unique.
On the evening of the performance, festivalgoers will have a one-of-a-kind opportunity to experience theater while enjoying the beauty of Vilnius’ Old Town. As twilight falls and the surroundings take on a cinematic charm, it becomes easy to immerse oneself in the reality created on stage.
